The Unit Circle (Using Special Angles in Degrees & Radians)

Lesson:

335 - 1 Hour 20 Minutes

Summary:This lesson is the study of the unit circle (a circle with the radius of one unit). It begins with finding exact values using quadrantal angles and then moves on to special angles of pi/4 radians (45º), pi/6 radians (30º), pi/3 radians (60º) and their related angles. The main focus of this lesson is using these angles to find exact values instead of using a calculator.

After this lesson, you will be able to:

  • understand how the x coordinate and the y coordinate of points on the unit circle relate to the 6 trig ratios, sine, cosine, tangent, sin cos tan and cosecant, secant, cotangent, csc sec ctn or cot
  • find the exact value of the six trig ratios of quadrantal angles in the domain of 0º ≤  θ ≤  360º :
         - 0 or 2pi radians (0º or 360º)
         - 0 or pi/2 radians (90º)
         - 0 or pi radians (180º)
         - 0 or 3pi/2 radians (270º)
  • find the exact value of the six trig ratios of angles with a reference angle of:
         - pi/6 radians (30º)
         - pi/4 radians (45º)
         - pi/3 radians (60º)
